Having another tool in the housing units of the Polk County Jail to control behavior is beneficial to officers and inmates, creating a safer environment for all. Providing simple access to these programs gives the inmates the tools to be more productive members of our community when they are released. *Programs available to the inmates free of charge include Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Substance abuse Education, Cage Your Rage, Financial Planning, Gamblers Education, Health Education, Parenting, Writing, Thinking for a Change (Urban Dreams), HiSET (High School Equivalency), General Life Skills, English as a Second Language, Shelter Information, and Veterans Administration Representation. there is no mandate the inmates use the paid side of the tablets. *Use of the tablets, while incarcerated, is a choice left up to the individual inmate. No social media websites are approved for usage by the inmates. *The web access for the inmates is limited to a pre-determined list of vetted websites with no ads or external links to unapproved websites. If the receiving party wants to cease receiving messages, they can go to the Telmate website and discontinue receiving messages. The inmates cannot communicate with anyone outside the Jail unless the receiving party goes to the Telmate website and signs up to receive messages. *The messaging provided to the inmates is secure and 3rd party monitored for content. These services are provided free to the inmates with no cost to Polk County.
Delivery is now electronic transfer to the entity involved. *The administrative use of the tablets (class sign-ups, medical requests, chaplain services, or other requests) on the free side of the tablet greatly reduces the use of paper and the time it takes Jail staff to deliver the requests to the appropriate area. Again, there is no cost to Polk County for these tablets or their usage, nor are the inmates required to use the paid services offered.
Any proceeds from the 3-5 cents-per-minute charged to the inmates on the paid side, goes to Telmate. *The electronic tablets are provide to the Jail by the company, Telmate, at no cost to Polk County.
